MOVING THROUGH THE MADNESS, MONET'S SERIAL PROCESS

Painting Workshop: MOVING THROUGH THE MADNESS, MONET'S SERIAL PROCESS

Saturday, November 22, 2025 | 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Instructor: Andrea Mossop

Working in series simultaneously developing a motif, in loose expressionistic gestural strokes, drawing in paint, learn how the act of painting is a sustaining affirmation of life.

You will create six small paintings at the same time, a conversation on the same subject. Learn key methods from Monet's practise of pursuing an image repetitively to the ultimate scale of the waterlilies. The motif of his garden, his Japanese bridge, cascading willows or wisteria, or haystacks in series., each in turn the object of his attention under continuing focus served to order his interior world through difficult times and personal challenges. And leave a legacy of peace and beauty. Learn the two key tactics of motif and movement.

This workshop draws inspiration from Ross King's bookMad Enchantment: Claude Monet and the Painting of the Water Lilies. and also from Monet's practise of pursuing an image repetitively to the ultimate scale of the waterlilies. Reference will also be made to how Winston Churchill's painting practise sustained him through 55 years.

Study notes and links as well as materials list will be sent in advance of the workshop.

All levels of painters. Oil with acrylic underpainting or acrylic or other medium of choice.

limited to 14 participants

Fee: $140

ABD with Mark the C - Allistonian Brockvillian Dionysian

a fundraising event for the St. Lawrence Writers Festival

On Saturday November 1, the St. Lawrence Writers Festival presents the show "Allistonian Brockvillian Dionysian - ABD", Brockville native Mark Cassidy’s hilarious and heart warming memoir of growing up in a hotel and motel in small town Ontario.

"Every small town in Ontario has one on its main drag. The hotel. A historic building whose charm has been reincarnated -- or not,” says Mark. "  I spent part of my childhood in one of those. Follow the highway out of the small town, and before long you'll pass a roadside motel. I spent my adolescence in one of those.”

ABD with Mark the C has been performed at both the Hamilton and Kingston Fringe Festivals to rave reviews. More information about Mark is available at www.thresholdtheatre.ca.

Tickets for the Arts Hub Brockville show will go on sale October 1.

The musicians of Ensemble Caprice have travelled to the four corners of the globe, giving performances in dozens of countries on four continents. The Ensemble’s tours have taken its members to Asia, China, Taiwan, Africa, Morocco, Tunisia and South Africa as well as several European Countries and the Americas. It has been the featured guest ensemble in many prestigious festivals, including the Lufthansa Festival of Baroque Music in London, festivals in Bruges (Belgium) and Utrecht (the Netherlands), the Felicia Blumental International Music Festival in Tel Aviv, and, in Germany, the Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci, the Early Music Days in Regensburg, the Händel-Festspiele in Halle, and the Stockstadt Festival.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY...

“Listening to Pierre's music is rejuvenating. Beside his extraordinary touch and tone, the notes and melody appeal directly to the tender side of our human nature”

Steve Vai

“This is beautiful... Pierre is one of the GREATS!!!”

Tommy Emmanuel Cgp.

“Pierre Bensusan's music is a true inspiration.”

Suzanne Vega

“Pierre is one of my favorite guitarists. He has created a new way of playing and is the king of the DADGAD tuning.”

Michael Hedges

“For me, Pierre can only justly be compared to someone of the stature of Keith Jarrett; so total is his mastery of the solo instrument, his dazzling harmony, his many innovations, and his deft command of counterpoint, the jazz idiom, folk expression, and all genres between and beyond. An entire history unfolds as he plays. But really, like Jarrett, the emotional depth – and this is where true artistry often likes to live – of many of his songs and compositions is all, well, breathtaking. With only his steel-string-acoustic guitar – and sometimes his rich, affecting voice – Mr Bensusan can disassemble your heart and hand it back to you restored and renewed. As he did to mine tonight. A true giant.”

James Volpe Rotondi (editor at Guitar Player Magazine)

"I've seen Alfred Brendel, Itzhak Perlman, Daniel Barenboim, Lynn Harrell, Nureyev, Placido Domingo, etc., etc., perform magnificently. Tonight, in Atlanta, in the last half of the second set, Pierre Bensusan went a quantum beyond the warm, compelling, appealing, extremely accomplished guitarist whose recordings and performances I've eagerly sought for over 30 years. He's achieved the sublime -- decades of technique, creativity, intuition, passion, and intensity crashed together -- a man transformed, singular, stunning. I have so seldom had the privilege and pure animal joy of experiencing this caliber of artistry."

Rain Crow (a fan)
