Celebrate National Poetry Month 2024 with the theme of WEATHER.

This April 2024, we invite poets and poetry lovers to delve into the experiences, feelings, and inspiration that weather offers. Whether the serenity of a snowfall, exhilaration of a summer downpour, or the familiar whispers of a gentle breeze, the League of Canadian Poets and The Canada Council for the Arts invites you to explore WEATHER this National Poetry Month – April 2024.

We invite you to attend a Poetry Reading & Open Mic at Arts Hub featuring award-winning Ottawa poets Susan J. Atkinson and Doris Fiszer with Brockville poets, Lois Lorimer and Alice McMurtry + first 3 poets to sign up at the door.

More information about the featured poets:

Susan J. Atkinson is an award-winning teacher and poet born and raised in Northern England. After 15 years working in the Toronto film industry she now lives in Ottawa. Recently she was named Honourable Mention in The New Quarterly's 2023 Nick Blatchford Occasional Verse Contest and was Longlisted for Exile Edition's 2023 Ruth and David Lampe Poetry Award. Her work has appeared in journals, anthologies and online. Atkinson's debut collection, The Marta Poems was published by Silver Bow Publishing in 2020. Her second collection, all things small, will be published in Spring 2024.

Doris Fiszer is an Ottawa author of two poetry collections: If I Were A River (Silver Bow Publishing, 2023) and Locked in Different Alphabets (Silver Bow Publishing, 2020).She has published two chapbooks, The Binders and Sasanka (WIld Flower). She was the recipient of the 2017 John Newlove Award and Tree Press's 2016 Chapbook Award. Her poems have appeared in a variety of journals and anthologies across Canada and the United States. She serves as a first reader for Arc Poetry Magazine. She is a retired Business Communication Professor and enjoys playing the piano and spending time with her family.

Lois Lorimer is an actor, teacher and poet born in Brockville. Her poems appear in journals including: Arc, Literary Review of Canada, Hart House Review, as well as five anthologies and recently in an American publication: The Wonder of Small Things: Poems of Peace & Renewal (Story Publishing, 2023). Her poetry chapbook, Between the Houses, was published in Edinburgh. Lois's first collection, Stripmall Subversive was published by Variety Crossing Press. Her acting career included stage, film and radio. She taught Drama and English in Toronto. She is delighted to welcome Ottawa poets to Poetry Brockville.

Alice McMurtry is a writer and museum professional. She holds a BA in English Literature and History and a Masters of Museum Studies from the University of Toronto. She has been a book reviewer with Publishers Weekly since 2014. Her short story, All Things Considered, appeared in Grain Magazine. Other creative work has appeared in October Hill Magazine and the poetry anthology Hill Spirits V. She has been a judge for several literary contests, most notably the Booklife Prize and NYCMidnight. She enjoys writing short fiction and poetry. She lives with her husband, Evan, and her cat, Skittles, in Brockville, Ontario.
