Artist’s Statement:
Dave has been an enthusiastic community artist throughout his life. His works are on display throughout eastern Ontario, but have been viewed by millions around the world. His love of history and working on grand scale murals and sculptures have helped him create works that appear epic in nature. These works demand our attention but in an aesthetically pleasing way. In some works, his use of linear perspective, intense colour and absorbing compositions pull the viewers eye into forgotten times reminding us of our heritage, our communities, our values. Dave also reintroduces ordinary subjects and scales them up creating new extraordinary views, new meaning, new questions, and new opportunities to discover the overlooked beauty in our lives.
His murals may be seen from Barn silos to large city buildings in Eastern Ontario. His sculptures are seen from Upper Canada Village to the depths of the St. Lawrence River, and from boardrooms to city parks. The teacher in Dave hopes that his work will continue to hold one’s attention and to provide inspiration to deepen the viewers curiosity and reflection.

Artist Statement
Shackles’ artwork delves deeply into the enduring traces left by moments of change and the choices we make—markers such as tattoos, oxidation, rust trails, peeling paint, and wrinkles. For Shackles, these physical imprints are far more than surface details; they represent the transformation that occurs over time, the memories embedded in objects and people, and the resilience that emerges from weathering life’s challenges. By seeking out these markers in everything from family histories and personal identity to the ships and buildings that shape our environments, Shackles invites viewers to reflect on the stories and emotional journeys that these traces embody. He highlights their significance through his thoughtful use of design, dynamic forms, expressive brushwork, and vibrant colour, aiming to evoke a sense of connection and empathy in those who engage with his art.
This fascination with visible evidence of life’s journey naturally led Shackles to his recent Rowing Series. In these works, he weaves together his passion for painting with his rowing knowledge. The Rowing Series builds on his broader artistic exploration of markers, extending the dialogue to include the physical and emotional impact of movement, teamwork, and perseverance. Through these paintings, Shackles seeks not only to depict the beauty of rowing, but also to highlight the universal themes of memory and resilience that are central to his work.
